About Bleak House

Bleak House, named after the novel is where Charles Dickens lived while he was writing David Copperfield and other of his works. It is a majestic property, probably originally built as a fort before becoming the great Victorian writers seaside home in the 19th-century.

Dickens wrote from a small study with views of the Broadstairs coastline and the sea. He is known to have entertained widely, with Bleak House being visited by the great and the good of the era, together with prominent members of society. He is further known to have spent a contented times in the house, apart from being a place for him to entertain, in his eye's it was first and foremost the family home he loved. He revelled in happy times with his wife, members of his family, particularly his children with whom he often played in the garden.

In Charles Dickens time the house was appropriately called Fort House, he is known to have always though of it as "Bleak House" but the name was not officially changed until some 30 years after his death in 1870.

Charles Dickens was a great mixer, below the house visitors can still see the pub "The Tartar Frigate" the inn where he would take a drink, smoke a pipe and chat with local fishermen.

The fascinating story of Bleak House during the time when it was lived in by Dickens is recalled in the Charles Dickens Museum, this can be found in a lovely old house on the main sea-front at Broadstairs. The museum is full of lively interest with memorabilia and original papers from Bleak House.
